Frequently Asked Questions…

  • What is NovoCore® Premium?

NovoCore® Premium is an engineered vinyl floor, consisting of a beautiful but tough top layer of luxury vinyl adhered to a stable, rigid, and waterproof core. The pre-attached backing options (such as cork or a sound absorbing pad) can offer extra noise resistance attributes versus traditional laminates or click vinyl planks.

  • Does NovoCore® Premium look realistic to real hardwood?

NovoCore® Premium plank flooring features an embossed texture, which mimics the grain of real wood flooring.

  • How well does NovoCore® Premium hold up against bangs/drops for example if a hammer was dropped?

We rarely see indentation issues with NovoCore® Premium products. Most indentations can be avoided by ensuring there are no heavy rolling loads over the floor, and using traditional installation methods when moving heavy items (e.g. use a smooth plywood panel when rolling in refrigerators, etc.). Also common-sense use of floor protectors under furniture legs, mats under rolling chairs, etc. are also recommended.

  • How durable is NovoCore® Premium flooring with pets?

We warrant that NovoCore® Premium will not stain from pet (domestic cat or dog) stains, including urine, feces and vomit, providing it is cleaned within 24 hours!

  • Is NovoCore® Premium safe?

NovoCore® Premium is safe for you and your loved ones. All NovoCore® Premium floors are subjected to rigorous tests by Third Party Laboratories that are designed to ensure all NovoCore® Premium products meet the highest standards and do not harm interior air quality. These rigorous tests have resulted in N NovoCore® Premium floors receiving FloorScore™ certification. This means our products do not release harmful VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) into living environments.
NovoCore® Premium is also 100% free of harmful plasticizers such as ortho phthalates.

  • How much will NovoCore® Premium move with temperature and humidity changes?

NovoCore® Premium is extremely stable. The planks are not affected by humidity or other types of moisture, to provide you with superior stability.

  • Is NovoCore® Premium sound absorbent?

Yes, NovoCore® Premium’ sound insulation class is excellent, with an IIC rating of 70dB (Impact Insulation Class – ASTM E492-09) and an STC rating of 75dB (Sound Transmission Class – ASTM E90-09).Walking sound is a lot softer and quieter compared with most other hard surface floor coverings such as ceramic, wood or laminate flooring.

  • Are NovoCore® Premium floors suitable for wheel chairs or motorized chairs?

NovoCore® Premium floors can be used in homes where wheel chairs are needed, but NovoCore® Premium should not be applied to ramps. We recommend that you glue the joints when motorized chairs will be used.

  • Why add foam pad or cork to the back?

A pre-attached backing will provide a natural sound barrier and extra joint support for extra noise resistance attributes versus traditional laminates or click vinyl planks.

  • NovoCore® Premium planks are 100% waterproof. Is the cork backing or sound absorbing pad also waterproof?

Yes, the entire plank, including the backing, is 100% waterproof, whether cork or padding.

  • Is NovoCore® Premium recyclable?

NovoCore® Premium can be recycled by companies with adequate equipment including flooring manufacturers which can recycle its material for new flooring.

  • Can NovoCore® Premium be installed over existing flooring?

Yes, NovoCore® Premium can be installed over most existing hard surface flooring. The exceptions are laminate, floating floors of any type, loose lay, and perimeter fastened sheet vinyl. These types of flooring should be removed prior to installing NovoCore® Premium. You can also install over tiles, as long as it is not a floating installation. The existing floors still have to meet the level requirements, which is no more than a 3/16” (5mm) difference in a 10 foot (3m) span. Please see NovoCore® Premium installation instructions for further details. Never install NovoCore® Premium over carpet.

  • Where can I install my NovoCore® Premium Floor?

NovoCore® Premium can be installed on all levels of the home including wet rooms and directly over most hard surface subfloors.

  • Are there rooms that are inappropriate for my NovoCore® Premium floor?

Very few: a room with a floor drain, sump pump or one that is exposed to the elements (like outdoors or in saunas). Although is it 100% waterproof, NovoCore® Premium should also not be installed in areas prone to flooding as water might sip through the bevels.

  • Can NovoCore® Premium be installed in 3 season homes where the home will not be climate controlled in the winter?

NovoCore® Premium can be installed in homes without climate control when proper installation precautions are taken.
NovoCore® Premium can be installed in cottages or rooms without climate control with the following conditions:
    a) NovoCore® Premium installation essentials must be met.
    b) The crawl spaces must be enclosed and vented and meet all requirements and the job site conditions must be correct.
    c) Insulation of the floor in the crawl space is recommended.
    d) Temperatures must stay above 50˚F (10˚C)

  • Can I install my NovoCore® Premium floor over floor heating?

Yes, NovoCore® Premium is compatible with water based floor heating systems. You should ensure the radiant heat surface temperature doesn’t exceed 81°F (27°C).

  • How large is the area that NovoCore® Premium can be installed over before having to use transition strips?

NovoCore® Premium installation allows up to 60 lineal feet (20m), in either direction, with no transition moldings needed as long as the flooring can freely move. That’s 3,600sqft! (400m2). Make sure to respect the 1/4″ (10mm) expansion space around the perimeters of the room.

  • Do I need to install a molding for each door opening?

As long as you are within the limit that does not require transition strips, unsightly door transitions are fortunately not required either! NovoCore® Premium installation allows up to 60 lineal feet (20m), in either direction, with no transition moldings needed. Make sure to respect the 1/4″ (10mm) expansion space around the perimeters of the room.

  • Does the subfloor need to be leveled prior to installing NovoCore® Premium?

Although NovoCore® Premium, thanks to it rigidity, hides minor subfloor imperfections, the subfloor must be clean and level to 3/16” (5mm) within a 10 foot (3m) span.

  • Do the grout lines on my existing flooring need to be leveled before installing NovoCore® Premium?

For installation over existing tile, you would need a self-leveling compound to fill in low grouted joint areas.

  • Does NovoCore® Premium require an underlayment?

When installing NovoCore® Premium, underlayment is not required because NovoCore® Premium’s Sound Insulation Class is already very good with an IIC rating of 70dB (ASTM E492-09)
Some NovoCore® Premium collections come with a hypoallergenic cork underlay or a sound absorbing pad, which provides a natural sound barrier and extra joint support.
If Novocore floor doesn’t have a pre-attached underlay, with an underlay of 1 mm to max 1.5 mm thickness with a high density (>180kg / m3) and high compressive strength (>200kPa) that supports the click system during daily use. Underlay with a low density and an inadequate compressive strength could damage the locking mechanism and will void warranty. If the floor has a pre-attached underlay, the use of an additional underlay could damage the locking mechanism and will void warranty.

  • Does NovoCore® Premium require a moisture barrier?

Although this floor is waterproof, it is not aimed to be used as a moisture barrier. The subfloor must be dry (max 2.5% moisture content – CM method). It is advised for the ground to be covered with a minimum 0.15mm vapor barrier. This product is also not to be installed in areas that have a risk of flooding such as saunas or outdoor areas.

  • For bathroom installations how should NovoCore® Premium be installed around the toilet? Are there any caulking specifications for areas you can't cover with a trim piece like around showers and tubs?

Depending on the project, you can allow the toilet to be placed directly on top of NovoCore® Premium. Otherwise, you could trim/cut it tight to the toilet as well. For caulking, please use a silicone caulk.

  • Do I need to acclimate my NovoCore® Premium floor before installation?

NovoCore® Premium is stable to temperature variations and it is in general not necessary to acclimate, unlike standard laminate or LVT which usually requires leaving your floor in open boxes 24 to 48h in the room you will install before installation.
Although, if the boxes of flooring were exposed over 2 hours to extreme temperatures (under 10˚C – 50˚F or over 40˚C – 100˚F) within the 12 hours before the installation, acclimation is required. In this case, keep the boards in room temperature for at least 12 hours in unopened package before you start the installation. The room temperature should be maintained consistent between 20° to 25° C (60˚to 80˚F) before and during installation.

  • Can I install kitchen cabinets directly over my NovoCore® Premium floor?

We do not recommend to install your kitchen cabinets directly over your NovoCore® Premium floor. NovoCore® Premium quality can be guaranteed as long as the floor can move freely.

  • Can I install NovoCore® Premium on a wall or ceiling?

Yes, you can. For wall and ceiling installation the planks need to be fully glued down on the substrate.
Many designers use NovoCore® Premium for partial wall installation because of the unique and highly realistic color available in the NovoCore® Premium selection. However, the NovoCore® Premium warranty do not cover wall installation. We recommend Taylor 2091 (for commercial application) or Henry© 650P glues.

  • Which underlay is recommended for a Novocore without pre-attached backing (Ascot)?

An additional underlay is not required, but could improve acoustic performance and could also absorb some irregularities in the substrate. Best results can be expected with an underlayment of 1 to max 1.5mm thickness with a high density (>180kg/m3) and high compressive strength (>200kPa) that supports the click system in daily use. Cheap underlays with low density and inadequate compressive strength could damage the locking mechanism, it is therefore recommended to confirm the compatibility of the underlay with NovoCore prior to installation – usually this is mentioned on the packaging.

  • How do I prepare the subfloor to install NovoCore Premium?

Before installing NovoCore Premium flooring, make sure the subfloor adheres to the following conditions:

    1) The existing subfloor surface must be clean, flat, dry, securely fastened, structurally sound and level to 3/16” / 5 mm within 10 feet / 3 meters.
    2) The substrate should not slope more than 1” / 25 mm per 6 feet / 2 meters in any direction.
    3) Depressions, deep grooves, expansion joints and other subfloor imperfections must be filled with patching & leveling compound.
    4) When using an underlay, please follow the recommendations given by the Installation Manual and ask your local sales representative.

The correct preparation of the subfloor is paramount as product damages resulting from improper underlays or subfloors are not covered by the warranty.

  • Is there a recommended Cleaner?

Bona Floor Care System. Includes floor cleaner solution, mop, microfiber cleaning & dusting pad.

  • Can I use rugs or mats on my NovoCore® Premium floor?

Yes. We recommend non-staining vinyl-backed mats or woven rugs. We do not recommend the use of rubber- or latex-backed mats because the chemical (antioxidant) used to keep the backing from becoming brittle can permanently stain your floor.

  • If water sips through the bevels can it damage the subfloor?

It depends on the subfloor: generally speaking, standing water between the floor and the subfloor can only have negative consequence such as development of mold, release of odor, it can spread to the surrounding wall and damage the wall paint, etc…
The planks themselves are waterproof, but once installed they do not provide a fully airtight surface. Water can still sip through the bevels if left over 24 hours. Water spillage as is the case in bathrooms and kitchens won’t damage the floor but standing water must be avoided at all times. We recommend cleaning up water spillage as soon as possible, before 24 hours pass.

  • Do I need to wax my NovoCore® Premium floor?

No, it resists staining, is easy to clean and requires no waxing. Waxing is not compatible with this product and using wax will void warranty.

  • How do I repair a damaged flooring panel?

We recommend ensuring that your initial flooring purchase includes several extra NovoCore® Premium planks in case you have one that needs replacement. Follow these steps to remove and replace a damaged plank:
    1. Heat the damaged tile with a hair dryer until pliable
    2. Score the tile with a sharp utility knife on a diagonal
    3. At the diagonal cut, pry the tile out of position with a putty knife
    4. Cut off the groove on the long side and short side of the new plank to be installed. Apply one beam of adhesive on the long side and short side tongue of the existing planks that will receive the new planks. Then carefully place the new planks in position and remove the excess of glue immediately with a damp cloth.

  • What type of chair protectors can I use on a NovoCore® Premium floor?

Support furniture with wide-bearing, non-staining floor protectors. Ideally, the protectors should be at least one inch in diameter, made of non-pigmented, hard plastic and rest flat on the floor. Non-staining felt protectors are also acceptable. Casters with a minimum 3/4″ flat surface width or floor protectors are recommended for all moveable furniture. Make sure any metal protectors are rustproof. Replace your narrow-dome furniture rests with wide-bearing ones.

  • I'm not happy with my floor. How do I make a claim?

If you feel that you have a warranty related problem, you should take your original purchase receipt, back to the retailer where you purchased the floor and file a warranty claim with that store. The store will then contact us to begin the warranty process. An inspector may come to your home to evaluate the conditions and determine what caused the problem. Once an evaluation is complete you will be contacted with the results. The whole process could take up to 20-30 business days, depending on the circumstances, although most issues are resolved much faster.

  • How do I remove challenging stains?

For chocolate, grease, juice and wine stains, use lukewarm water and a non-abrasive cleaner. Nail polish, tar, markers, crayon, lipstick, ink and cigarette burns can be removed using nail polish remover or denatured alcohol.

  • Can I use a steam mop on my NovoCore® Premium floor?

The use of residential steam mops on this product is allowed. Use at lowest power with a suitable soft pad, and do not hold a steam mop on one spot for an extended period of time (longer than 5 minutes). Refer to the steam mop’s manufacturer instructions for proper usage.

  • In the event of a flood will NovoCore® Premium dry?

Yes, we recommend that NovoCore® Premium is promptly uninstalled, sorted separately, and placed in a dry environment. Please allow 48-72 hours to dry. Once both your subfloor and NovoCore® Premium panels have dried completely you may reinstall.
